First Grade News

The students have made a wonderful transition into first grade.  We spend the month of September getting familiar with the routines and procedures of a new classroom with new expectations. First grade students have become “cartographers”, as we have been working on a mapping unit.  Students have listened to many stories involving mapping skills and have worked on creating maps of their home, their street, their town and their neighborhood.  In Fundations, students have learned all the letters and letter sounds and have begun to “tap out” and blend CVC words (consonant, vowel, consonant).  Students have been focusing on the correct letter formation when writing letters and words.  In writing, first-grade students have been focusing on starting all their sentences with capital letters, ending with correct punctuation and using finger spacing between words.  In Math, the students have been working hard on solving addition and subtraction situations using multiple strategies.  Students have been becoming more fluent with their addition and subtraction facts up to 10, using counters, drawing pictures, using doubles facts and number lines.
